Bone Broth

Save money by making your own bone broth at home! It is nutritious, tasty and extremely versatile! Rich in collagen, it can help improve hair, skin and nails as well as assist in immune system support!
Bone broth is also a great thing to have on hand for when sickness strikes the home. Our family drinks it like a tea as well as incorporates it into soups to help assist our body’s immune system response.

Ingredients
- Whole Chicken
- (1/4 cup) Apple Cider Vinegar
- (4 cups) Vegetable scraps (carrots, celery, onions, parsley, oregano, leeks, etc.,)
- (16 cups/1 gallon) Filtered Water
Directions
*This recipe uses a crockpot or instapot. Cook Time: 24-28 hours.
- Place the carcass and all veggies/scraps in the slow cooker or instapot.(I like to use onion, leek, turmeric, black pepper, ginger, oregano, parsley, carrots & celery!)
- Cover the carcass with 16 cups (1 gallon) of water.
- Add the apple cider vinegar over the bones and let it sit for 30-45 minutes.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer. If using a crockpot, turn the setting to high heat until boiling, then reduce heat to low. If using an instapot, leave the lid off, then turn the setting to saute and allow to boil for a few minutes. Reduce heat/turn the setting to slow cook. Place the lid on your Instapot (and seal the vent on top) then allow the pot to simmer for 12-24 hours. (During the winter months, you can even make this bone broth on your wood stove as you heat your home!)
- Strain your broth through a colander. Once you’ve strained it, it is officially ready for use! You can use it in soups, stews, gravies or even for sipping!
- I like to store my broth in a quart sized jar in the refrigerator. To store for long term, you may place in a freezer bag and pull out when needed! When you use it, feel free to add a pure salt to it for extra flavor.
TIP: Whenever you chop veggies and have scraps, don’t pitch them! Simply place them in a gallon freezer bag and continue adding more scraps over time. Once you have 4 cups of scraps, you can use them to make broth! You will not want to use vegetables that have high water content in them (cucumbers, peppers, etc.,).
