We are Caleb and Lauren Holton, owners and operators of Holton Livestock Company LLC. We are a small family farm located in Southern Ohio specializing in direct-to-consumer farm raised protein products.
A Little Bit About Us
Caleb was raised on a tobacco and cattle farming operation and was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA in his youth. Lauren grew up surrounded by the farming traditions of her family and enjoyed riding horses and raising livestock for the local county fair. Both alumni of The Ohio State University, Caleb is a district manager for power production technologies and Lauren is a nurse practitioner in oncology research.
Our Dream
We always knew we wanted to return to our roots in Southern Ohio and raise our family on a farm of our own, where life's lessons can be so prevalent, and every corner offers a learning opportunity. We were blessed to make our dream become a reality in the fall of 2017 with the purchase of our first farm. In 2021, we were again blessed to purchase and move to another farm just down the road, which better aligned with our farming goals and our methods of operation. What started off with a few cattle and goats has grown to a full commercial cattle breeding and production operation, along with poultry, pork, sheep, and hay. As busy parents and off-the-farm employees, we have always been passionate about how our food was raised. After several years of growing our herds and getting our farm to a sustainable operation, our direct-to-consumer operation was born.
We pride ourselves on raising everything with heart, right from the start!
Our goal is to raise quality, natural protein products that you and your family can be proud of.
Cattle:
Breeding Program:
Here at Holton Livestock Company, we like to keep our cattle in-house, meaning most of our cattle are born and raised right here on our family farm. In fact, the majority of our maternal lineage can be traced back to one cow from 30 years ago. Our angus-based cows, calves, and bull rotationally graze on pasture, to support regenerative farming practices, maximize our pastures, and improve soil stability. Our breeding program is backed by science with careful emphasis on genetics, hybrid vigor, frame size, calving ease, maternal instincts, and carcass yields.
Meat Program:
About 50% of our cattle who go into our meat program are born right here at Holton Livestock Company. The other half are purchased at weaning from other vetted local farmers who share similar genetic philosophies with our herd. The calves are all integrated and raised together, where they have full access to non-GMO, locally sourced grain, and locally grown hay to support ruminant health and quality meat production. On average, our cattle are freshly marbled and processed at 14-16 months of age.
Poultry:
Laying Hens:
Our happy laying hens forage on bugs and grass, in addition to their non-GMO, locally sourced grain. Our chicken tractors keep our hens safe from predators while allowing them to enjoy the sunshine, and roam and graze on fresh grass. The eggs are hand collected, washed, packaged, and refrigerated. Our hens move onto fresh pasture to help naturally spread their nitrate rich manure which bolsters strong, nutrient dense soil and grass for all our rotationally grazed livestock.
Meat Chickens:
Our Cornish-rock cross chickens are purchased from a local hatchery and shipped to us at 1 day of age. Once their primary feathers come in and they can safely withstand the weather elements, the chickens transition from the brooders to chicken tractors where they rotate on fresh pasture. Our meat chickens enjoy all the benefits of living on pasture, with full access to bugs and grass, aka nature’s candy, fresh sunshine and non-GMO, locally sourced grain. Our proven practices provide premium tasting, delicious lean meat.
Hogs:
Our hogs are purchased locally from premium hog farms with proven genetics. Following weaning, the hogs are brought to Holton Livestock Company, where they spend their days rooting through dirt, rolling in mud, eating, and snoozing. With full access to locally sourced, non-GMO feed, and clean municipal water, our hogs provide highly marbled, great tasting meat. Our happy hogs put down some incredibly nutrient dense manure that is later spread onto our pastures to help support our regenerative agriculture practices.
Sheep:
Our Katahdin sheep come to our farm from proven local farms after weaning. The sheep spend their days feasting on a non-GMO, locally sourced feed, specifically designed for their needs to ensure optimal health and growth for taste. Our sheep are fully protected from predators and live out their days in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.
