Frequently Asked Questions

About Holton Livestock Co.

Q: Do you vaccinate your animals?

A: We believe in humanely treating our animals and do vaccinate our breeding cattle and young calves to prevent the most common communicable diseases found in the Ohio Valley that can be life-threatening, including tetanus, black leg, and lepto. Our hogs are only given dewormer. We do not vaccinate our chickens. Our feed is locally sourced, non-GMO, and contains no artificial growth hormones or antibiotics. We treat our animals, if needed, with antibiotics, which is extremely rare. We abide by all safety measures, including all withdrawal times and keep meticulous records to ensure the safety of all of our products. We have had some recent questions regarding if the vaccines we use in our cattle contain mRNA technology, and they do not.

Q: Can I order meat in bulk?

A: Yes, absolutely! Purchasing in bulk is the most cost-effective way to secure a variety of cuts of locally raised quality meat. We have taken the guess work out of ordering in bulk and now offer packed quarters and half shares of beef and packed half and whole shares of pork. What do we mean when we say "packed" shares? Essentially, we have created set and predetermined cuts of meat that you would find in each of the respective shares at set prices and with set packaging so there's complete transparency with what you will receive in your share. We have broken down each of the shares by what cuts of meat you will receive and the cut specifications. Although we have no doubts that you'll love our products, we keep a wide variety of meat available for individual purchase should you wish to try some out before committing to a large purchase. Send us a message for more details about what bulk meat purchasing option may best meet your family's needs.

Q: How do you manage to run a farm operation on top of your other obligations?

A:  As busy parents, business owners, and off-the-farm employees, we have worked to make our farm as efficient and self-sustainable as possible. However, if we have learned anything, farming is far from predictable and can lead to long hours. The great news is our little ones love the farm and all the animals and equipment that come with it, making farming a family affair. We also live in a great community surrounded by fellow farmers and family members who are always willing to lend a helping hand.

Q: Are all your meat products frozen? What is the difference between frozen and fresh meat?

A: Yes, all of our meat products are frozen at the peak of freshness. Did you know that our vacuum sealed frozen products when stored properly have no expiration date?!?  This means that you and your family can enjoy fresh meat for months and months to come. By freezing our meat products immediately following packaging, we are locking in the freshness and supreme quality. Meat that is refrigerated or considered "fresh" that has never been frozen loses nutritional value and quality before being cooked and consumed.

Q: What is this blue stamp on my meat? Is it safe to consume?

A: Our USDA processors use a blueberry-based ink to mark the meat for that animal that is being processed as part of their inspection processes. It may be possible that at times you'll see a small blue stamp on your meat. It is tasteless, edible, and completely safe to consume. Did you know that when you buy from us, your meat is coming from 1 animal and can be traced back through a number system? Unlike what you might receive at the grocery store where multiple animals may be found in 1 package of ground beef, for example. There have been a large number of studies on this, and we encourage you to take a look for yourselves.

Q: Why support local when I can get my meat products while I'm at the grocery store getting my other household goods?

A: A slogan you'll often see on our social media platforms is, "Know your farmer, know your food." It's important to understand where your food comes from, how it was raised, and what it was fed, as each of these components impacts the quality, taste, and nutritional value of the product you're consuming. By supporting farmers directly, you're cutting out the middleman and have a direct line to ask these important questions. We also do our best to make shopping with us as convenient as possible. We offer several "meat up" locations in which we will bring your order to a location near you and we participate in a number of farmers markets both locally and in the greater Cincinnati area. You can shop with us in person or enjoy convenient on the farm pick up by appointment. Additionally, shipping will be launching soon where we will ship your order from our farm directly to your door.

If you have any other questions about our farming practices, product availability, pick up options, or others, feel free to head over to our contact us page and send us a message. We will reply as soon as possible.
